The best way to build your skincare routine based on the 5 main skin type!
Let's talk about building your skincare routine.

It can be overwhelming with so many products available and constant advice on what to use. It's especially frustrating when you see a "miracle" routine on social media that promises clear skin but doesn't work for you. We have all been there!
That's why creating a personalised skincare routine is so important. Remember, everyone's skin is unique, so what works for some might not work for you. Today, I'll guide you through building a basic routine tailored to your specific skin needs.
Here's a way to identify what skin type you have. Although it is always best to seek professional help from a beautician to get a proper skin assessment.
Let's go through the 5 main skin types to find out which one you are?
What skin type are you?
1. Normal: This is where everything is balanced not too oily, dry, or sensitive, just right.
2. Oily: Typically, your skin tends to be shiny, has large pores, and is prone to acne/breakouts.
3. Dry: Sometimes you get a rough texture to the skin or a flaky or tight feeling.
4. Combination: This is a mix of oily and dry areas, usually an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and drier cheeks.
5. Sensitive: Your skin might react easily to products, redness, itching or burning sensation
The basic steps for every skin type
The truth is everyone's skin is different, but the foundation of a good skincare routine stays the same. Cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser and SPF. These are the 5 key steps your skin needs to stay protected and glowing, no matter your skin type.
When should I use each step?
Getting the order right in your skincare routine helps your products work better and gives your skin exactly what it needs at the right time. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to use and why:
Morning Routine:
Cleanser – Gently removes any oil, sweat, or residue from the night before.
Toner – Preps the skin and balances your pH after cleansing.
Serum – This is your targeted treatment step. Choose one that addresses your skin’s specific needs, like hydration, brightening, or breakouts.
Moisturiser – Locks in hydration and keeps your skin barrier healthy.
SPF – Protects your skin from sun damage, even on cloudy or indoor days. This step is non-negotiable and should be applied through the days.
Evening Routine:
Cleanser – Removes makeup, SPF and build-up from the day.
Toner – Refreshes and preps the skin for better product absorption.
Serum – Apply a night time treatment based on your skin goals (like repair, calming, or anti-aging).
Moisturiser – Seals everything in and helps your skin recover overnight.

What Ingredients Should I Look Out for Based on My Skin Type?
Once you understand your skin type, the next step is choosing the right ingredients that actually work for it. Skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all your products should support your skin’s natural balance, not fight against it. Here’s a breakdown of what to look for depending on your skin type:
1. Oily Skin
If your skin tends to get shiny quickly or you’re prone to breakouts, you’ll want ingredients that help control oil, unclog pores, and reduce inflammation.
Look for: • Salicylic Acid – exfoliates inside the pores to keep them clear • Benzoyl Peroxide – fights acne causing bacteria • Niacinamide – helps regulate oil production and calm redness • Kaolin Clay – absorbs excess oil without drying too much • Sulfur – gently reduces breakouts and balances oil
Note: These ingredients can be powerful, so if your skin starts feeling tight or dry, balance them out with a gentle gel cleanser or lightweight moisturizer to avoid over stripping.
2. Dry Skin
It can feel tight, flaky, or dull and if it gets too dry, your skin may actually start overproducing oil to make up for it, which can lead to breakouts.
Look for: • Ceramides – restore and protect the skin barrier • Hyaluronic Acid – attracts and holds moisture • Squalane – a lightweight oil that hydrates without feeling greasy • Lactic Acid – gently exfoliates while keeping skin hydrated
Using nourishing ingredients regularly will help your skin stay smooth, soft, and comfortable all day.
3. Normal Skin
Even if your skin feels balanced, it still needs care to maintain that health and prevent future issues like dryness or dullness.
Look for: • Hyaluronic Acid – keeps hydration levels steady • Retinoids – great for long-term skin renewal (use at night) • Ceramides – support a strong skin barrier and prevent dehydration • Vitamin C – brightens and protects against environmental stress
Think of these as maintenance ingredients they help your skin stay happy, healthy, and glowing.
4. Combination Skin If you’re oily in some areas (like the T-zone) and dry in others, your products need to balance both without overloading the skin.
Look for:
• Salicylic Acid – helps clear oily or breakout-prone areas • Niacinamide – evens out tone and texture across the whole face • Lactic Acid – smooths and gently exfoliates without over-drying
You may even benefit from using different products on different areas (like a lightweight gel in the T-zone and richer cream on the cheeks.)
5. Sensitive Skin
With sensitive skin it tends to reacts easily to harsh ingredients or fragrances. Your goal is to calm, protect, and keep things as gentle as possible.
Look for:
• Hyaluronic Acid – deeply hydrates without irritation
• Squalane – softens and strengthens the skin
• Niacinamide – calms inflammation and supports barrier health
• Ceramides – repair and protect the skin barrier
• Vitamin B5 (Panthenol) – soothes and reduces redness
Always patch test new products and avoid alcohol, strong fragrances, or essential oils.
Final Thought:
The key to great skincare isn’t just the brand or price it’s the ingredients. Once you know what your skin needs, you’ll start seeing better results with less trial and error. If you’re ever unsure, stick to products with fewer ingredients and introduce new ones slowly.
Build your skincare routine with confident.
Creating a skincare routine that truly works for you doesn’t have to be complicated. Once you understand your skin type and choose the right ingredients, everything becomes more straightforward and your skin will thank you for it. Remember, consistency is more important than perfection. Start with the basics, listen to your skin, and give it time to respond.
